Come Oscars night and all eyes will be on two things – the winners and, of course, the red carpet fashion.

And while most can only gaze at the leading ladies' glitz and glamour as they arrive for the ceremony, the public do have the chance to choose a gown worthy of the star-studded event.

Just 12 days before the big bash – this year fronted by Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin – the Academy hosted the annual pre-Oscars catwalk show on Tuesday.

And in keeping with last year's tradition, nine up-and-coming designers showcased original evening gowns in the hope of securing the honour of dressing the on-stage awards escort, who appears to bring on the famous statuettes.

The show-stopping frocks presented for the challenge included a layered strapless number featuring an elaborate fishtail, courtesy of Phoenix-based Rania Salibi, and a cream gown with a heavily ruffled skirt from LA's Olivier Tolentino.

New Yorker Ivy Higa unveiled a gown that epitomised vintage Hollywood glamour, while Oday Shakar – an LA atelier whose designs have been favoured by Hayden Panettiere and Emily Blunt – produced a striking one-shouldered fitted dress.

Fernanda Carneiro, Elda De La Rosa, Phong Hong, Ari Sheuhmelian and Kelsy Zimba are also taking part.

Jeweller to the stars Martin Katz – whose fans include Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman, Kate Winslet and Angelina Jolie – provided extra sparkle at the catwalk event, which took place at the Academy's Beverly Hills headquarters.

All the worthy designs have been posted on Oscars.com where the public can vote for their favourite until March 1.
