Meryl Streep, George Clooney and Gary Oldman in the running for Oscars

This year's Oscars nominations have been announced in LA – and Meryl Streep has a shot at a hat-trick of Oscars after being nominated yet again.

The best actress nod for her role as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady is the latest chapter in a four-decade love affair between the Hollywood great and the Academy.

If she is triumphant on the night, it will be 30 years since the grand dame of acting last won and follows scores of nominations.

Meryl must see off competition from Glenn Close, who starred in Albert Nobbs, Viola Davis, nominated for her role in The Help, Michelle Williams, for My Week with Marilyn and newcomer Rooney Mara – aka The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

In the best actor category, best friends Brad Pitt and George Clooney find themselves in competition.

Angelina Jolie's partner has been put forward for his role in Moneyball while his good friend is up for his role as a land baron trying to reconnect with his daughters in The Descendants.

Also vying for the trophy in this category are Gary Oldman for his role in Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy, Demian Bichir, who stars in A Better Life, and Jean Dujardin, for his role in silent movie homage The Artist.

After the announcement the actor said he felt "like a lucky Frenchman in Hollywood," especially since he just started learning English.

All these films are in the coveted best picture category, along with Steven Spielberg's War Horse, and Martin Scorsese's first 3D film Hugo, Extremely Loud and Incredible Close, a drama based around the 9/11 attacks, The Tree of Life, and Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris.

Leading the pack was Hugo with 11 nomiations, while The Artist garned ten.
