Oscars 2013: Winner Jennifer Lawrence is Hollywood's golden girl
Jennifer Lawrence was the Oscars golden girl, when she scooped the Best Actress gong for her role as troubled Tiffany in Silver Linings Playbook.
"This is nuts!" said the 22-year-old. Addressing the crowd she said: "You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell," alluding to a stumble on the way to the stage.
The actress had been the favourite to win the gong, in spite of a late flurry of bets on French actress and Amour star Emmanuelle Riva, who was celebrating her 86th birthday on the day of the awards.
"Happy Birthday Emmanuelle," said Jennifer from the stage.
Also nominated in this category was Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty and Naomi Watts for The Impossible and nine-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis for Beasts of the Southern Wild.
The award comes after a remarkable couple of years for Jennifer, who has quickly built up one of the most enviable careers in Hollywood, starring in blockbusters including X-Men and The Hunger Games. She will soon be reunited with her Silver Linings Playbook co-star Bradley Cooper in Serena.
When Jennifer, who wore Dior Haute Couture, arrived on the red carpet, she revealed how proud she was of the film for which she had been nominated.
"It's been such an amazing ride," she said. "We cared so much for it and loved it and the way that audiences have reacted to it has been amazing."
