Oscars 2013 winners: an emotional night for Jennifer, Daniel and Ben

It was an emotionally charged night for the award winners at the Oscars 2013 when Daniel Day-Lewis won his record-breaking third award for Best Actor, Jennifer Lawrence proved that she is Hollywood's golden girl and Ben Affleck moved millions of viewers across the world with his touching Best Picture acceptance speech.

After paying tribute to the stars and cast of his film Argo, Ben turned to look at his actress wife Jennifer Garner in the audience.

"Thank you for working on our marriage," he said. "It is work – but it's the best kind of work," he quipped. "There is no-one else I would ever work with." His proud wife, mother of his three children, struggled to hold back her tears.

Ben won an Oscar with Matt Damon in 1997 for the screenplay for Good Will Hunting. His career has had mixed fortunes since then. "I never thought I would be back here and I am," he said.

Daniel Day-Lewis, who became the first actor to win three Oscars when he scooped the Best Actor gong for Lincoln, gave a more light-hearted acceptance speech. He was presented with his award by Meryl Streep. "Three years ago, before we decided to do a straight swap, I had been committed to play Margaret Thatcher," he quipped, referring to Meryl's role in The Iron Lady. "And Meryl was Stephen's first choice for Lincoln."

On a more serious note he sald: "I really don't know how any of this happened. I have received so much more than my fair share of good fortune in my life."

Other winners included Jennifer Lawrence, who scooped the Best Actress award for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, British singer Adele, who won Best Song for Skyfall and Ang Lee, who won Best Director for Life of Pi.
