"This is an incredible honour," said the film's producer Brad Pitt. "I know I speak for everyone involved when I say that it has been an absolute privilege to work on Solomon's story.
"One man brought us together to work on this story — Steve McQueen."
The emotional British director then took to the microphone to say his thanks for the honour. "I dedicate this award to all the people who have endured slavery," he said. "Everyone deserves not just to survive, but to live."
Cate Blanchett and Matthew McConaughey
Cate Blanchett was named Best Actress for her role in Woody Allen's movie Blue Jasmine and Dallas Buyers Club star Matthew McConaughey scooped the Oscar for Best Actor.
"Those who think films with women at the centre are niche: they are not," stated Cate. "People want to see them and they make money".
