The red carpet is rolled out for the Oscars as host Ellen DeGeneres begins the countdown

The countdown is on for the Oscars. The red carpet has been rolled out two days ahead of the 86th Academy Awards, when it will be trod by Tinseltown's biggest names.

Hollywood boulevard is getting decked out for its biggest event of the year, when the world's top film stars will sashay their way down the red carpet to the hum and flash of the paparazzi's cameras.

A team of workmen descended on Hollywood Boulevard and roads were closed around the Dolby Theatre, which plays host to the awards.

The first of the giant Oscar statuettes was put up in front of the theatre, and elsewhere giant billboards were installed bearing the Oscar logo and images of host Ellen DeGeneres.

Meanwhile, TV icon Ellen has been sharing her excitement with fans on Twitter.

"It's a beautiful (Daniel) Day (Lewis)! Only 3 more until the Oscars. Are ya excited? Ewan (McGregor) me both. #Oscars" wrote the presenter.

A couple of hours earlier she shared the news that singer Bette Midler would be performing at the ceremony: "@BetteMidler is performing at the #Oscars for the first time this year! I have to call her and make sure we don’t wear the same thing."

On Thursday she posted a picture of her Oscars dressing room. "It's really happening!" she wrote.

While the aesthetics of the ceremony are still a working progress, the nominees' fates were sealed on Tuesday.

Thousands of ballot slips – both physical and in online format – were counted as esteemed members of the acting community submitted their votes before the 5pm deadline.

More than 5,000 panel members are responsible for deciding who will be going home with the prestigious accolades.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are among those tasked with delivering the verdict, along with last year's big winners, including Daniel Day-Lewis, Anne Hathaway, Christoph Waltz and Jennifer Lawrence.
