Stars step out for final awards ceremony ahead of the Oscars

The night before the Oscars on Sunday 2 March, stars gathered for a night of fun and celebration at the Film Independent Spirit Awards.

While the ceremony held on the Santa Monica beach is traditionally a more relaxed affair than the Hollywood extravaganza, it didn't stop celebrities such as Lupita Nyong'o, Cate Blanchett and Angelina Jolie from donning their gladrags in honour of independent film.

Paula Patton made her first public appearance since the news emerged that she and Blurred Lines singer Robin Thicke were separating after almost two decades together. The actress stunned in a yellow floral lace dress that showed off her svelte figure and toned legs.

Steve McQueen and his film 12 Years A Slave swept to victory on the night, scooping the gongs for Best Director, Best Feature, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Supporting Female for Lupita Nyong'o.

Dallas Buyers Club stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto also continued their winning streaks by scoring Best Male and Best Supporting Male respectively for their roles in the AIDS drama. Matthew walked the blue carpet in a shiny bronze suit and bright blue shoes accompanied by his beautiful wife Camila Alves, while Jared revealed he was feeling "very good" about the imminent Oscars ceremony.

Cate Blanchett continued her unbeatable run in the Best Actress category for her title role in Woody Allen's film Blue Jasmine, while French movie Blue Is The Warmest Colour won best international film.

Oscar-nominated Nebraska won Best First Screenplay, while Fruitvale Station was awarded Best First Feature.
