The Oscars 2016

The world unites to celebrate if Leonardo DiCaprio wins at the Oscars - will you be going?

Fans around the world will be watching with baited breath to see if Leonardo DiCaprio wins the Best Actor award at the Oscars on Sunday evening. The 41-year-old is hotly tipped to take home the award for his performance in The Revenant, and his supporters around the world are already planning a special celebration if he does.

Almost 9,000 fans have confirmed they will gather in London's Leicester Square to party in the early hours of Monday morning should Leonardo win, while a further 25,000 have said they're also interested in joining in the celebrations on a Facebook page proposing the event.

Leonardo DiCaprio fans around the world are planning to celebrate if he wins an Oscar

Called "If Leonardo DiCaprio wins the Oscar, everyone meet in Leicester Square," the event creators explained that they are organising the celebrations in conjunction with other events that are taking place in Barcelona, Madrid and Dublin.

Staff at The Odeon in Leicester Square are also backing Leonardo to win the award, and have changed the sign on the front of the cinema to "Leodeon" and placed a huge model of an Academy Award on a balcony behind it.

They are not the only people who believe Leonardo deserves the award, after missing out on his five previous nominations over an impressive 25 year acting career. His friend and former Titanic co-star Kate Winslet has been openly supportive of Leonardo throughout awards season, and previously ruled out an Oscars boycott so as not to miss his win.

Speaking to Press Association earlier this month, Kate explained: "I feel very strongly that it may possibly be Leo's year and he's my closest friend in the world and I just couldn't imagine not being there to support him, and I think those are reasons enough really to show my face."

Leonardo faces competition from last year's winner Eddie Redmayne, along with Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon and Michael Fassbender. It appears the odds may be in his favour after an incredible awards season run that has seen Leo win the Best Actor awards at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The Oscars will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday 28 February.
